2 Getting to Know Emergent Literacy Learners, PreK–1 When looking at education today, we can see that there is a diverse range of skills and abilities present in students that have helped in increasing their literacy. Even though students are taught these skills to help increase student literacy development, teachers must also instill the love of reading in their students. The very beginning stage of literacy development is the most important stage for students to begin their reading development. This is a stage that students can develop and master the needed skills needed for reading. Some of these skills are the concept of print, oral language, writing, phonological awareness (Williams, 2017). In this paper, I will discuss oral language, the concept of print, and phonological awareness of a student and then discuss ongoing support for that student. For this Pre K-1 assignment, I decided to work with a student from Kindergarten. I will call this student by his initials, LB. LB is an emergent literacy learner from Mexico. He is a five- year-old boy who is extremely sweet and polite. He loves sports, particularly soccer, and loves trucks. LB’s family is of low socioeconomics and their spoken language at home is Spanish. LB speaks little English at home and wants to speak Spanish to his friends at school.
