Some Common Alternate Electron Acceptor Couples Example: Nitrate respiration in E. coli (a.k.a. nitrate reductionor denitrification) Organic-C + NO3- => CO2 + NO2- e- donor e- acceptor (Nitrite) More energy can be gained from complete reduction of NO3- to N2 In a process called Denitrification NO3-=> NO2-=> N2O =>N2 BBOM 11e Sec.17.13-17.14 Because there is a smaller drop in E’o when NO3-isthe e- acceptor Note: Less energy is gained from NO 3 - => NO 2 - than from O 2 =>H 2 O Questions?
