Ex. flu, fever 2000 More chronic diseases that are related to unhealthy lifestyles and behaviors and have a longer duration. Chronic Diseases Ex. CVD, Cancer, Alzheimer's Patterns of Disease and Death Leading cause of death in the US Chronic Diseases Specifically Heart Disease (CVD) Cause of Death 1900 2000 Heart disease, cancer, and stroke Alzheimer's in old people Ethnicity, Income, Disease African Americans have higher rates of health problems that European Americans Hypothesis: Higher level of poverty and lower educational levels. Hypothesis does not work Hispanic Americans experience poverty and low edu. But health not affected Basically differences not well understood Change in Life Expectancy 1900 Life Expectancy = 47.5 yrs 2000 Life Expectancy = ~ 77 yrs Behavior changes caused more cardiovascular disease Decrease in infant mortality rate Single most important factor in raising Life Expectancy Changing Field of Health Income and educational levels related to behaviors that increase health risks Life Expectancy – Where do we stand?
