Some Important milestones in the Development of Virology Some Important milestones in the Development of Virology Date Contributors Contribution(s) . *1797 Jenner Developed vaccine against small pox. *1884 Pasteur Developed vaccine against rabies. 1882 Mayer Transmitted tobacco mosaic disease into healthy plants by injecting water extract of mosaic tobacco leaves. 1892 Ivanofsky Recognized that a filterable agent was responsible for mosaic disease in tobacco plants. *1898 Loffler and Frosch Discovered foot-and-mouth disease virus, the first animal virus to be described. *1898 Beijerink "Rediscovered" Tobacco Mosaic virus and called it contagium vivum fluidum . 1902 Reed Discovered the cause of Yellow Fever, the first human virus to be described. 1907 von Prowazek Described the first insect virus. 1911 Rous Described the transmission of Rous sarcoma virus in chickens 1915 Twort Discovered bacteriophage. 1933 Shope Described papilloma virus of rabbits.
