Alia Fater 2/1/07 Thought Paper #1 When Americans think of countries struggling with hunger issues, most of them don’t immediately think of the United States. Most think of the third world countries shown on commercials asking for donations. As one of the most powerful and richest nations in the world, the poverty in America is often overlooked. There are efforts being done to help those in need, but not nearly enough. The four given articles discuss food insecurity and hunger in our country and also provide alarming statistics. The first article, Hunger in the U.S.: A Brief History, explains the history of hunger in the United States. It explains when the period of hunger occurred, when it was addressed and when it was not addressed. For example, the 1960s was a significant period of time because it was when the war on poverty began. With not much to worry about externally, the U.S. was able to focus on internal issues, such as hunger and malnutrition. We realized that if there were poor families struggling
