Finding a Brief Definition in “The Nature of Beauty” In “The Nature of Beauty,” Alicia Ostriker writes an insightful poem about the different perceptions of beauty as seen by a group of college students in a college level literature class. Presented as an assignment, the students throughout the semester began to unravel the nature of beauty in their own personal experiences. Nevertheless the speaker of the poem compares the nature of beauty to the brevity of a cloud in the sky, which is the underlying metaphor and governing concept for the entire poem. With an opening quote from T.S. Elliot, “I can only say, there we have been; but I cannot say where”, a powerful tone is set for what the speaker of the poem is trying to convey. The speaker is trying to express that though the nature of beauty can be found in many outlets, it’s a fleeting notion that cannot be fully articulated. Ostriker first makes mention of the fleeting nature of beauty in the first few lines by stating that “As sometimes whiteness forms in a clear sky / To represent the breezy, temporary / Nature of beauty,” (ll. 1-3). These lines help the audience understand the concept behind the assignment given to the literature students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
