Take away their African names and give them a Christian Anglo name 1624: in Virginia 22 blacks are recorded; no last names; half of them do not even have first names (they are just called “negro”) 1639: Blacks are prohibited from serving in the militia and not allowed to have arms 1640: 3 run away servants; 2 whites and 1 black; they were caught and the 2 whites would be whipped and ordered to serve their master for another year, the black was whipped and ordered to serve his master for the rest of his life 1641: first selling of a black child in Virginia (indenture servitude: master owns your labor); also at this time the sexual contact of blacks and whites was made prohibited 1640’s and 1650’s: prices for black indentured servants are going up
