February 26, 2007 Antebellum North Industrialization takes place and market raises question of urbanization and population o Which came first? o Sanitation: none on the cities People throw garbage out in the street Slums, poverty, crime, street gangs, houses of prostitution – Irish is blamed (not considered “white” so blamed for urban decay) No uniform until 1850’s when police force develops Cultural activities; theaters, art galleries, libraries, concert (high culture), Low culture: Shakespeare performances, almost all writers live in the city, schooling in the city is better than towns (longer instructional terms) Cities are primary work places * compare north and south societies o North (northeastern cities and old northwestern farmers) emerges as capitalistic, quickly moving to a market economy o Entrepreneurial, progressive, ambitious o Working long and hard o Puritan work ethic Reform o The Drunkard’s Progress; circulated by prohibition and temperance
