Evolution of Culture (book goes more into this) - Hunting gathering; agrarian; pastoral; traditional societies. - Industrialization to Nation-States. It exerts force on the individual II. Elements of culture (5) A. Language and Communication -Windows into a culture -Non-verbal Communication -Family relationships B. Customs and Rituals -Ways of going about things (guy and girl on a first date) C. Values -Definition: abstract ideals which are generally common among people in the same culture. -Standards of Judgment by which people decide on value -American Values vs. Japanese Values In the Olympics, when medalists asked “how did you get here?”, the American said they sacrificed and worked hard and Japanese said my coach worked so hard to get me here. -Value Conflict
