It was illegal to marry a deceased wife’s sister but you could marry first cousins. Marriage was encouraged only between ones class. Many marriages were considered a business deal. Most woman married by age 25. Woman were supposed to make themselves available for their husband when he desired sexual intercourse but she was never to desire or want sex. Until 1857 divorce could not be obtained without a private act of parliament so marriage was pretty binding. When Queen Victoria asked her mother what she should know about sex her mom responded “Just close your eyes and just think about England.”
