Exam Review Sheet – Midterm #1 PS 111 Fall 2006 Notes: Please keep in mind that this is a study guide ; that is, it is not meant to be an exhaustive list of the items that will be on the exam. There’s a good chance that some of these things will make it on to the exam; but there’s an equally good chance that items not included here will be on the exam. This guide should prove to be valuable when studying, but you should not rely wholly upon it. In other words, use this guide; but also look over your notes and the books carefully when preparing for the exam. Short Essay: You will be given four terms or phrases in this part of the exam, and will need to provide answers for three of them. Each answer is worth 10 points. If you answer all four, we will only grade the first three (i.e., it would be a waste of time to answer all four). In this part of the exam, you will want to start by providing a good explanation of the term or phrase. But that’s just a start. You’ll then want to move beyond this definition and explain the significance of the term. Why is it important to understand this term? How does it relate to other terms and concepts we have covered so far in class? Incorporation Republic Equal protection clause Nationalization Preemption Establishment Clause Plessy v. Ferguson Republicanism Civil Rights Act of 1964 Three eras of federalism Lemon test Confederation Nationalization Two-party system
