Native American History 1987 – “For thousands of centuries… the continent we know as America stood empty of mankind and its new works” Wrong - people were already here - Seen as one group of Indians with one culture and one language - 75 million indigenous people Diversity Language- over 2000 different Writing- some could, some couldn’t Artistic Expression- through pottery or song and dance Religion- different reasons/expectations for how the earth was created Ethnicities - Eskimo (Inuit) - Makah - Pacific NW – Canada & Washington - “People of Salmon” - Hunted: seals, whales, fish - Migrated - Pueblo – Midwest deserts – clustered around rivers - Created irrigation - Hunted: buffalo - Used hiding tactics to scare buffalo over cliffs - Canokia – St. Louis, Missouri - “Mound Builders” - Would bury their dead in a mound of dirt - Farmed - Trade Network - 30,000 people - Calusan – Florida - Speared: tuna, gators, rays, whales - Gatherers Communities Warfare -Each group had seen/fought Rights of Passage -Blackfoot – stick through chest
