1.Throughout units 3 and 4 it has been a little tough to distinguish what has been the mostprominent compositional element in these films. There are two that I think are the mostprominent are mise en scene, and camera work. I feel as if these go hand in hand weatherit be a still shot at a certain angle of a scene or how the camera moves throughout thescene. This is partially the same opinion I had when I had taken my midterm the onlydifference is that I am incorporating camera work into it. Mise en scene is thearrangement of scenery and surroundings of a certain setting. I believe that these are themost prominent compositional elements still because of the movies we watched. Theseunits seemed to feature movies with some more serious tones and horror genres that usedthese techniques effectively. The movies from these units that come to mind are Stalker(1979), The Witch (2016), and Get Out (2017). These movies all had stories that hadunsettling feelings about them and the mise en scene added greatly to it. I’ll talk aboutStalker first. After our 3 characters get off the train tracks they are left in an open foggyfield that gives the weird sense of peace that a normal field would but with the fog andscattered debris an uneasy and unsafe feeling is created. As they walk the camera cuts toa broken down car that looks partially buried in the ground but blocks off most of thebackground. This is the same car from the shot before it but the fog that covers the nowbackground is gone and as the camera steadily approaches the car and moves through itswindow our characters come into view as well as broken and old military tanks. Thecamera stops before it moves completely through the car and sits with a little bit of thedriver side window still in view. The characters walk forward down a hill and out of viewand we are left looking at the open filed. The scene uses both the setting and cameraangles to amplify this scene. The way the camera stays steady and moves forwardthrough the environment using the truck to block and reveal the scene helps create theuneasy and suspenseful feelings perfectly, and I wish more film makers would use similartechniques. The second film I will talk about it is The Witch. Around the 37 minute markwhen Caleb is in the woods we look through corn stalk piles into the woods. The pilesblock off much of our view of the forest as well as focuses us in on the center of thescene where the adults are moving towards the forest to find Caleb. At the 39 minutemark Caleb is running deeper into the dark woods moving behind more and more treesuntil we lose sight of him as the camera slowly zooms out and loses focus on Caleb. Thisis similar to the scene from Stalker and is excellent for similar reasons. Although there isnot anything to reveal the camera pulling away as Caleb slowly disappears adds to thefeeling of being lost.
