Legacy of Slavery Paper
Here is your first writing assignment:
REQUIRED READINGS (ON LINE) You may access these readings by going to the
Course Library and selecting "Readings for the Reparations Paper":
Cox, James. “Activists Challenge Corporations that They Say are Tied to Slavery,”
USA Today, February 21, 2002, 1-2.
Horowitz, David. “Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Blacks is a Bad Idea for Blacks—
and Racist Too,” Front Page Magazine, January 3, 2001, 1-4.
Robinson, Randall. “Chapter Nine: Thoughts on Restitution,” The Debt: What America
Owes to Blacks. (New York: Plume Books, 2001), 199-234.
You may also use your textbook. (See proper citation on syllabus).
This writing assignment will tax your ability to summarize material from the class, the
three short reading assignments on blackboard, and your general opinions of our
society. This is NOT intended to be a research paper. If you desire any additional
sources, you may use your textbook to bring out more specifics from the days of
slavery. If you use my class notes (you do NOT have to cite), when using the readings
from blackboard, or your textbook, your citations may be in parenthetical formation:
(Painter, 25) or the readings (Cox, 1) and so forth.
If you want to bring in additional sources, which is not necessary nor should you, you
MUST include a bibliography and use footnotes.
Your 1500 word essay will take the form of a brief that you are writing for your law
firm. The issue is reparations. Your goal is to organize a plan of attack for your
company’s upcoming law suit. You will decide the following:
What is the name of your law firm? Is your law firm for or against reparations? If so,
