Dadrian Ellington Hist 223 November 5, 2007 Westernization without Modernization: Lack of Control Some people argue that the western world brought development to the continent of Africa, but mere development of infrastructure such as the snakes of railways that criss-cross the continent, removing valuable resources, is hardly a step in the direction of sustainability in Africa. Europeans have interacted with Africa for centuries. The majority of that relationship consisted of the exploitation of information and resources from the continent. Europe had a double mission with regard to the resources of Africa. They intended to uses raw materials from the continent to meet the growing requirements of the newly industrialized western world as a partnership between Africa and the West and the whites were also in search of Africa’s virgin wealth. (Mazrui) The relationship that developed between Africa and the West came to be one of immense exploitation on behalf of the West leaving the continent deprived and not in control of its natural treasure. Africa is the richest continent in the world. Seventy-five percent of all the minerals in the world can be found in Africa and the continent possesses forty-five percent of the world’s hydroelectric capacity. Yet, with all this potential, many of the countries in Africa are the poorest in the world. This overarching disparity is due in large part to the lack of control African’s have over significant issues pertaining to Africa. The state of Africa being westernized but not modernized is considered in this essay. We can understand the partnership between Africa and the modern/western world by examining the history of Africa with the West in terms of the relationship of exploitation that was created and is maintained.
