Unformatted text preview: Post War Economics New Deal and WWII Economics- Critics from the right republicans primarily Hoover: was relatively calm, but other republicans were crazy. Offering federal relief: waste extravagance and deficit spending! Going into debt.- Were not borrowing to go to war, were borrowing to cure domestic problems.- Conservatives and republicans dont see that as a legitimate expenditure (financing all the programs)- We start selling ammunitions, arms aid to England.- Roosevelt putting together new deal later called the democratic coalition made up of traditional democratic south (states minded people) but bothered about this but since south is hurting so b ad from depression it required federal help.- Labor coming into to coalition, intellectuals, immigrants, jews, many farmers, minorities!, primarily latin American who under the new deal are making steps out of republican to democratic. African Americans seeing democratic as the vehicle that is likely to get them the most.- Recession 1937 slip back into difficulties. Most non-democrats called it full blown depression. the new deal of implementing reimplementing programs were not working criticisms from both left and right (against capitalism)- You can see it! - Unemployment recession - Enter war in 1942 employment catches up. GNP increases dramatically once WWII kicks in and full participation in 1942.- Federal purchases (still deficit) republicans saw as legitimate since its for war purposes.- We get just one example of money pumped in economy.- South and California training grounds: gets money pumped in because of climate.- Workforce: soldiers without guns: rosie and lucy! : women employment.- Late 1930s (mid 1930s) some attention shifting to foreign policy oout of necessity since Roosevelt begins first 100 days in office, Hitler (in germany) building upon germanys humiliation after WW1, working his 3 rd right into final form (highly nationalistic) he begins to rearm and expand in the face of frances and englands indecision.- Land of lease program of aid to allied power (that is left) Poland and france got govt in exile which does not amount to much. Lend lease lend supplies and get leases for certain pacific islands. This gives a way that is satisfactory to congress to give aid directly to England without caring much about the isles. - Linden Johnson and John Kennedys Vision- John Kennedy the new frontier is a vision of opening American society so that war would share in it as a part of that new frontier.would share in it as a part of that new frontier....
