History 200 – Lecture #6 King George didn’t respond December 1875 Parliament outlawed all trade Congress is behaving more and more like an independent govt Gradual growing away – diversity: population, economics, politics, religion; society by American revolution has become different from mother country 1763 Rights, no taxation w/o representation Was the revolution radical? It does spawn a republic but on the other hand most Americans simply wanted to go back to the way things were 13 little democratic republics emerge; long term and short term reasons for it Two battles o Saratoga (upstate NY) British march down from Canada then isolate and move to New England October 7, 1777 Impact far beyond battlefield b/c France is watching France would be willing to aid USA if she thought they had a chance in winning; what France sees is the idea that the Americans might actually win so they move towards support of Americans b/c it is a way to hurt England s
