Mayor Rick Baker announced on Sunday that the city and Andretti Green Promotions have struck a deal to keep the race here in St. Petersburg until 2013. The local merchants are very happy about this because the race weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year for them. The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is an outside influence that affects the sales of each and every business that operates within the downtown St. Petersburg area. One store owner said that their store brings in an extra $4000 to $5000 on the race weekend. There are several factors that make a business profitable. One of the easiest ways is through an outside influence such as this. This race especially helps the food and drink business of St. Petersburg.
