The question comes whether the government should considerraising revenue through taxing Junk food and Soda? There has been a lot of arguments in regardto this topic. Many believe that taxes should not be imposed on junk food since taxation canchange the American attitude to what they are supposed to eat. Fast food is readily available andin case of taxation, the prices will shoot higher thus changing the consumer purchasing behavior.On other hand, Junk food are believed to be the primary cause of obesity and the cause ofsuffering to many Americans. The argument of taxation on junk foods is increasing beingevaluated and the consideration of pro and cons of each side helps in understanding whether thegovernment should increase the tax rates on junk foods.Junk Food are UnhealthUndoubtedly, the number of health-related issues amongst people are increasing atsignificant rate. For this reason, it’s obvious that government should impose taxation on junkfood. (Lloyd-Williams et al.,36) Almost every person in one way or the other have consumedjunk food or soda in their life. Most of these consumptions are done due to the availability ofsuch food in almost every street.
3People may have diversified opinions in regard to government efforts of addressing junkfood. Although the basic pragmatic approach will decrease the overall consumption as well ascreating awareness amongst people over the world(Beebe,16). One of the basic reasons for theimposition of excess duty on unhealthy food is preferable to decline its consumption level.According to the law of demand and supply, when the price of products increased its demanddecreases. The additional tax means an increase to the price which eventually decreases thequantity demanded.A healthy diet is as indispensable to a elongated and lively life. But the increasingconsumption of unhealthy food has resulted to lingering diseases such as diabetes, high bloodpressure and other conditions linked to what we eat and drink every day. The availability ofcheap junk food has been associated with the high increase in its consumption thus implying theneed for food consumption control measures.
