Ling110Spring 2015Students’ Questions. Weeks 7-8(unedited questions)(1) I look at the sample midterm, why the word of fluent state Latin?flu +e+nt (fr. Latin fluere) . It is PrP derivative, the root is flu(2) I'm not sure the reason why applaud and abbreviate do not happen with clustersimplification. You referred in the class that aspect has cluster simplification. I don’tquite understand it.Prefix ad-Cluster simplification happens ONLY if the root begins with `s`+ consonantaspect:ad+spec+e+tas+spec+e+t(cluster simplification)aspect(3) I have a question. When I learn the Latin roots, do I need to know theirmeanings as well? When you review the roots it's important to remember the meanings and it will be greattoreview the pages where many English words based on this particular root arementioned (seepp.325-328)in order to increase you academic vocabulary.Example:The Latin root scrib-‘to write’. There are about 100 English borrowed (from Latin)words that are BASED on this particular root: prescription, inscription, prescribe, inscribe, scripture, script, ascribable, ascribe, ascription, circumscribe, conscript, conscription, describe, description, descriptive, descriptively, indescribable, indescribably, manuscript, nondescript, postscript, etc....many others. It means that if you know the meaning of this root (to write) you can PREDICT themeaning of many English words borrowed from Latin and BASED on this root scrib-(4)Do we need to memorize the table of consonant correspondences?
Yes, you do by the date of the exam. I mentioned it in my lectures many times(5) Can we bring a dictionary to the exam ? If yes, paper one or electronic dictionary areallowed?
(7) ad+nect+e+t why there is degemination(ss>s) ?
(8) The root of vision , I can't only find vid in the book but why is viid ?
(9)I have a question aboutthe themetical vowel. That is, for "ii" and 'ee". We knowthat, "ii" is*not*changed in a word, for example, audit, which is "aud+ii+t". But for "ee",it can also become i, for example, credit, "cred+ee+t".So, I wonder, if there is "it" in aworld, how can we determine whether it is "ii" or "ee"?? And for a nonsense word,"claudit", is is"claud+ii+t" or "claud+ee+t" or both of them are correct?
