Like the APA, Jeanette’schurch believes homosexuality is a disease, or worse, the devils work. Jeanette discoversthrough her life that she is not like normal girls, she is attracted to the same sex, and isopen about it with her church. Her church preforms an exorcism and her mother punishesher by locking her up with no food. This however, does not cure her homosexuality. Whatthe Bible teaches Jeanette is that the Lord will love all his children, and this means hewill love her if she is gay, whether her mother or church loves her or not. In the novelOranges Are Not the Only Fruit, the protagonist Jeanette is pushed around by her churchand her mother because she is gay; however, the Lord will love her no matter whom sheloves.
