MAE 212 Prelim I March 6, 2007 7:30 - 9:00 PM Read and sign the academic integrity statement on the front of your test booklet. For Problems 1, 2 and 3 circle your final answers and show all work!!! Solutions not supported by appropriate development will not be accepted. Suggestions: READ the problems. The few minutes this takes will actually save you some time. Work through problems symbolically as far as you can – then input the numerical values to determine the final answer if a numerical solution is required. This will enable us to understand your process better. The actual numerical value is not as important as the correct process . Do the best job you can of having your solution to the problem describe your process . 1. (60 Points) The torque wrench shown has an outer diameter of 60 mm and has a solid circular cross-section. It is made of stainless steel and is deforming linear elastically (E=210 GPa, ! =0.3). The loads are applied at the cross-section labeled C, P 1 is in the –y direction and P 2 is in the –z direction. There are two strain gages applied to the torque wrench at points a and b as shown. a)
