Hutton lacked a conceptual model of plate tectonics as context for understanding his rock cycle. He also lacked an ability to put ages on geological materials or to put rates on geological processes.

Stratigraphy – the description and correlation of strata in sedimentary rocks – could be used to establish time relationships among rocks. The principle of original horizontality asserted that sediments are deposited as horizontal beds. Any folding or faulting of sedimentary rock layers happened after deposition. The principle of superposition says that each layer is younger than the layer below it, giving us a vertical time line.

Fossils are records of ancient life. Most fossils are of the hard parts of living organisms, and the most common fossils are the shells of marine invertebrates. Some originally softer living organisms have been preserved for millions of years because their substance has been completely replaced by minerals (here, wood replaced by silica).

The identities of fossils and their sequence of occurrence within a layered sedimentary formation – the faunal succession – could be used to match up similarly aged rocks from different outcrops. Combining faunal successions with stratigraphic successions
