Intro to Art Chapter 1 Vocab Art- a primarily visual medium that is used to express ideas about our human experience and the world around us. Visual medium that expresses ideas about human experience in world around us. Art engages us, away from everyday environment. Function- at the time a work of art is made, it is intended to do a job within a culture. Visual Form- materials from which the artwork is made; its formal elements, such as line, shape, color, texture, mass, volume, space, and so on; its overall composition (which is the arrangement of those formal elements), its size, its internal balance, and so on Content- includes the art’s imagery, its surroundings, and symbolic meaning as well as the customs, beliefs and values of the culture that uses and any text incorporated or about it. Aesthetic- the branch of philosophy that deals with art, its sources, its forms, and its effects on individuals and cultures Visual Perception- the basis of artistic creation. The essential component as the artist makes the work, because in a sense the artist is the first viewer of the work. Vision is
