Chapter 3 -Media- the plural form of the word Medium- an intervening substance such as air (paint) through which a force acts or an effect is produced. -Media- actual material and substances -Disciplines- the various branches of art making activity, like painting or video. Media in 2-D -Support- surface or underlying object which supports the work -Natural- rock -Other surfaces- wood, many types of paper, parchment, or any surface that can hold wet or dry media or can be incised. -Ground- the surface upon which a drawing is made, generally liquid coatings applied to supports. -Gesso- a white, paint-like substance that is brushed onto paper or canvas to serve as a ground for painting or silverpoint drawing Dry Media -Pencils, sanguine chalk, pastels and silverpoint; used in drawing; most common drawing tool is the pencil. Wet Media -Ink by pen or brush; make lines -can make wash Printmaking -Any medium that can produce multiple copies of an image or a design through a specific process. 5 Categories 1)Relief- areas not to be printed are cut away from the printing surface, so that the areas to be printed are left higher-image is transferred to paper or support in reverse image 2)Intaglio- wood engravings- have fine lines, a high level of detail and rich dark tones- cut into a flat surface, usually a metal plate, to make the image or design -etching-artists scratches a design -cut away what you want- also get reverse image -Drypoint- metal plate and scratch -Aquatint- a process related to etching in which the metal plate is covered with a powder of acid-resistant resin. Heat is applied, which melts the resin in an acid bath where exposed areas are eaten away
