What is an Ideal Gas? An ideal gas has the following two characteristics: The volume occupied by the molecules of an ideal gas is negligible compared with the volume of its container. The energies generated by forces among ideal gas molecules are negligible compared with molecular kinetic energies. (Small gas molecules are not attracted to one another) Most deviations from the Ideal Gas Law come from high pressures or low temperatures.

Ideal vs. Real Gases Ideal gas laws assume 1) no attractions between gas molecules 2) gas molecules do not take up space based on the kinetic-molecular theory at low temperatures and high pressures these assumptions are not valid
