Notes 2/1/07 I) Christological Heiesies a. Ebionites i. Jesus is just human ii. When the spirit comes down like a dove, he became divine, this was at his baptism. b. Gnostics i. Deny the humanity of Christ ii. Jesus just seemed to be human c. Monarchians i. (Type-1) Because Jesus was a human/became divine at baptism (divine logos) ii. (modul/type2) adopted by G at baptism II) Arius vis a vis Athanasius a. God and Jesus aren’t made the exact same way, but they are similar (homoiousious). Jesus was created by God, and although divines, was still created. “There was a time when Christ was not.” Meaning, he is less than God. b. Athanasius says the opposite, they are the same substance (homoousious). Jesus is not less than God, so they must be made of the same stuff. Instead of being ‘made’ by the father, Jesus was ‘begotten’ of the father. c. The struggle between Arius and Athanasius becomes epic and the church almost splits d. 231 – council of Nicaea. Constantine tells them to work it out already
