Notes 4/12/2007 I) Roman Catholic Theology a. Vatican I – (1870) when the pope speaks ex cathedra he is infallible, he will never lead us astray, aka he can’t be wrong. b. Vatican II – (1962-5) what is the churches relationship to other churches and other religions? Up to this point they had been saying that grace would come from taking the sacraments, so if you were outside the church you could not possibly have salvation. But they rethought these things. II) 19 th Cen Prot. Revivalism a. Finnay - allowed more rights for women and such. b. Moody – the moody bible institute. Just an evangelist guy from Chicago. c. Spurgeon – Charles (d.1892) very eloquent guy. d. Raikes – (d1811) started Sunday schools so that children who worked in factories could learn how to read. e. Graham – (still alive born 1918) took advantage of the invention of the television and used it to its fullest potential. Takes a modest salary, lives in a small house. III) 20 th Century Prot. Theology – this is a move back towards orthodoxy. a.
