Notes 3/27/2007 I) Post Calvin Shakeup a. Hugenots i. Middle class, mostly Calvinists ii. Outnumber/become more powerful than the catholics iii. Protestant king – take over france iv. Jacob Arminius – Calvinist priest – leading theologian 1. begins to disagree with calvin’s theology 2. believes god picks the elect based on your faithfulness 3. believes that ther’s free will v. senate of Dort (1618-19) 1. Arminius is declared to be a heretic. 2. Arminius is wrong and calvin is right II) English Reformation a. Henry VII i. Son Arthur – marries Catherine of Aragon. Next King/Queen. ii. Dies after 5 months iii. Catherine/Henry VIII (arthur’s younger brother) becomes king 1. Henry VIII – gets papal decree to marry Catherine of aragon 2. have a daughter Mary 3. divorces Catherine – because he wants a male heir, catholic church refuses to annul the marriage. iv. Marries Anne Boleyn because she’s pregnant 1. have another daughter named Elizabeth 2. he has anne beheaded v. he then marries jane Seymour
