Functional groups 4. 1 o , 2 o , 3 o , 4 o carbon atoms 5. Polar, non-polar molecules: dipole moment 6. Intermolecular forces: ion-ion; ion-dipole; dipole-dipole; hydrogen bonds; van der Waals forces 7. Hydrophilic, hydrophobic groups 8. Stretching, bending vibrations 9. Molecular “fingerprint” KNOW HOW TO: 1. Identify the different functional groups present in a given structural formula. 2. Classify compounds into families according t their functional group(s). 3. Name simple alkanes, alkenes, alkynes containing 1- 4 carbon atoms. 4. Name simple alkyl groups containing 1- 4 carbon atoms. 5. Determine if a compound is likely to have a net dipole moment.
