-Signal transduction requires two surface immunoglobulins to be stimulated

-However, this signal alone is not sufficient for activation. Requires help from a co-receptor

The antibody response to certain antigens does not require T-cell help 1. Thymus-independent antigens (TI antigens) 1. Can cause polyclonal activation of B cells (TI-1) 2. mitogens= polgyclonal activation of certain pathogens composed of repetitive carbohydrate or proteins presented in high density on surface of mitogen-(TI-2) 3. TI antigens produce IgM only, no somatic hypermutation and no memory.

-B cells needing T-cell help are activated in secondary lymphoid tissues where they form germinal centers 1. Antigen brought to secondary lymphoid structure, processed and presented on MHC class II on APC's to TH2 cells. Activates T Cell and makes clones. 2. BCR recognizes and binds antigen (crosslink and costimulatory binding), processes and presents on MHC II to TH2. 3. B-cell interacts with T-cell and becomes activated 1. BCR can bind antigen and send transcription factors to the nucleus 2. BCR can process antigen and display via MHC
