The American Revolution first started because of the increase of taxes in Britain. In 1765 govt pushed through Parliament the Stammp Act. It taxed a long list of items and when a stamp was put on the item it meant that the tax had been paid. Americans exercised a large amount of independence also. And they had greater political equality. What was independence like? Colonists moved slowly toward open rebellion. Thomas Paine also made the idea of American independence greater by mobilizing it. On July 4, 1776, the 2nd Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Ind. Wrote by Thomas Jeff., the Declaration of Ind. boldly listed the oppressive acts devoted by George III and confidently announced the natural rights of mankind and the sovereignty of the American states.
