While we certainly hope that our hypothetical reconstruction of the elusive medieval keyed zither will
eventually prove its own musical worthiness through a compelling realization of medieval literature in
performance, we by no means consider it to be a ‘de2nitive’ recreation. Many of the options we
considered during the process could just as easily have been adopted in place of those we 2nally decided
to employ. In fact, perhaps the most important aspect of the entire process is the realization that a
medieval hammered clavisimbalum may well have taken many forms, with a number of di8erent actions
of variable complexity. Our vision of what is possible should thereby be broadened far beyond the
conceptual straight-jackets of ZCM and RCM which have constrained all previous attempts. Should such
an expansion of viewpoint prove to be the result of our 2rst stab at re-imagining the instrument,
regardless of its ultimate musical success, we will be content with our contribution to the 2eld. ...
