Initial post: Part 1: Read “Once More to the Lake” by E. B. White, pp. 97-100 or “Androgynous Man” by Noel Perrin, pp. 243-244. Select one of the pieces to write about. Find two sentences that appeal to you and discuss their construction. Are they complete sentences? Do they have any commas orsemicolons? If they have commas or semicolons, use your Russell editing guide on pp. 415-417 and discuss why they are used, referring to the specific rule. Let me give you an example:“I read all the interesting articles in a couple of magazines I had, and then I went back and read all the dull stuff” (Perrin 243). I like the sentence because it is funny, and reflects the way I think when I am traveling. The author uses a comma here because he is linking two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (see p. 416, “Before Coordinating Conjunctions”.) Please use sentences that no one else has used yet, so this is an incentive to post early—you can take your pick! Then, in one sentence only, sum up your reaction to the author’s essay.
