St. Patrick’s Parish is a beautiful Roman-Catholic church located in Brighton, Michigan. I chose to visit this parish because it was the parish that my friend, Kara Stoltze, attended before she moved away for college. I had never visited St. Patrick’s before, so when it came to deciding where I should go for my field report I wanted to visit the church that she had grown up in. My older brother, Douglas, agreed to attend with me because I didn’t want to go alone. In my research on the history of St. Patrick’s, I was surprised to find that its location on Rickett road in Brighton has remained the same for over a century though the building itself has been through many changes. According to the Brighton Historical Society the beginnings of a Roman-Catholic community were already started in Livingston County in the early 1800’s. One of the early missionaries was Reverend Father Patrick O’Kelley who visited communities in Deerfield, Brighton, and surrounding areas. Because no church had been built yet, lessons and services were held in private homes. In the mid 1800’s a congregation in Brighton, Michigan was started by Reverend Father Lambert, and services were held in the homes of two of his parishioners. As the congregation grew the need for a church became evident and some land was purchased on what is now known as Rickett road; the present location of St. Patrick’s Parish.
