1 Maybe He’s Born With It … Maybe It’s His Own Choice. In Jean-Paul Sartre’s lecture, “Existentialism Is a Humanism,” he mentions how (according to an existentialist like himself) men are not born with dispositions or unchangeable characteristics. That cowards are not born cowards, but rather “a coward is defined by the deed that he has done.” This closely follows the rule of existentialists’ actions shaping and defining their lives and ultimately humanity. However, I argue that there are traits and characteristics that people are indeed born with and that although they may overcome these things, they certainly did not make the conscious choice to have that temperament because we are hardwired to doubt. In the example of Sartre’s man with cowardice, this man may choose to be a coward, and he may also choose to overcome his cowardice, but it would take much practice and dedication to train his physical reaction to things that bring out his cowardice.
