The knowledge I have acquired from Biology 225 has given me a greater understanding of my life. I’ve realized my intrinsic passion for science comes from making scientific discoveries in my daily life. For example, I’ve realized that my body is constantly working to stimulate and regulate functions in changing environments and situations. Since my body is always working it must refuel by eating and regain fluids by drinking. I must excrete my waste from these activities by going to the bathroom and sweating. My body needs a steady supply of glucose from food for cellular respiration so I can produce ATP and have energy throughout the day. I’m careful about my diet and the food choices I make, because it affects how I feel throughout the day. I try to balance how many lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins I consume daily. I also avoid fatty foods because they create high cholesterol in the body which can result in cardiovascular problems. I have learned that diets can cause living things to get sick and die or they can cause living things to stay healthy and live long lives. For example, my cat died last week unexpectedly and she seemed totally healthy and fine the day before. The veterinarian said she died from heart disease and probably got blood clots. I thought about what happened in her body that actually led to her death. High blood pressure and heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. I’ve learned that food consumption and diet affects individuals differently due to their metabolism, genetics, and how much they exercise. As I look around I see everyone is different from one another due to genetic diversity. I lift weights every week. I’ve changed my workouts significantly after I learned about muscles in Biology 225. Before I used to lift every day and I thought the more I lifted, the stronger I would get. I was wrong. I could lift more and build more muscle if I went to the gym daily, but I had bad

pains and serious injuries all the time which caused me to have to take breaks from my exercise routine to recover from injuries instead. I realized these bad pains that I was having were signals coming from my nerves telling my body that I needed rest. My muscles were overworked and broken down. I should have let my muscles repair to become stronger. Now I only lift three days and run six days a week which allows me to

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
