Introduction:Motivation in the workplace is defined as the willingness to exert high levels ofeffort toward organizational goals conditioned by the effort’s ability to satisfy someindividual needs. To reach high levels of performance, one must want to do the job well(motivation), must be able to do the job effectively (ability) and must have the materials, resources, equipment and information required to do the job (environment). Individualdifferences play a key role in motivation. Different things motivate different people.People are diverse in the personality, values, needs, abilities, cultures and interests theybring to their jobs. That is why these individual characteristics motivate one to workharder at some things than at others. Motivation is simply the reason that someone willact or behave in a certain way, or their desire for somethings, or sometimes even moreimportantly, their desire not to have something when they want to get the employees todo something, they have to give them a good reason if they want a elicit certain type ofbehavior from them. Motivation can come in many forms and can be positive ornegative. Finding out what motivates the employees to do well is the key to goodmanagement. Capitalizing on understanding why people do what they do and fosteringa motivated workforce means better organizational performance. It works best whenindividual needs are compatible with organizational goal. Motivation is also the processby which the employee’s efforts are energized, directed and sustained towards attainingthe goal. There are several reasons why employee motivation is important. Mainlybecause it allows management to meet the company’s goals. Without a motivatedworkplace, companies could be placed in a very risky position. Disengaged employeesare detrimental to the organization because it can infect the organization with negative
views. This will not only slow productivity but it can cause key members of a team toleave in a search of new opportunities. Identifying theseemployees within theorganization and addressing the cause of their unhappiness or dissatisfaction is critical. If actively disengaged people are unable or unwilling to reenergize and refocus, theorganization must take necessary actions for the good of the employees. Mostemployees need motivation to feel good about their jobs and perform optimally. Someemployees are money motivated while others find recognition and rewards personallymotivating.
