BIO 2870 Exam I Chapter 4 Epithelial Tissue Functions: - provide physical protection:  protect exposed and internal surfaces from dehydration,  abrasion, and destruction by chemical or biological agents - control permeability:  can be regulated in response to stimuli. Some areas are highly  permeable and some are not. - provide sensation:  have high rates of sensory nerves. Neuroepithelium is specialized to  perform a particular sensory function  provide sensations of smell, taste, sight, equilibrium, and  hearing produce specialized secretions:  epithelial calls that produce secretions are called gland cells.
