CASE STUDY (WEEK 3)Part I: Group DevelopmentThe Woodson Foundation, which coordinate with the public school at Washington,D.C to develop and improve their student performance by a series of measures. Theycombined the Woodson Foundation’s skill to create experimental after-school programcoordinating community leaders with the educational expertise of school staff.Five stage of group development:Forming stage:Everything is formed with much uncertainly, such as: group’spurpose, structure, plan, leadership, etc. In their first stage, they decided to make a formationand created an alliance between the parties, which include the Woodson Foundation, theschool district and The National Coalition for Parental Involvement in Education (NCPIE)with the purpose of improving school performance. Each organization will contribute adifferent role in maintaining the original purpose set out.Storming stage:Is considered likely to create conflict when all members accept eachother's existence but oppose the limitations of individual parties. It also conflicts aboutleadership decision. In this case study, it began forming a contradiction of how to work asschool district representatives concerned the dominant power and the influence of Woodson. They were also concerned about the issue of their power and limitation when school systemcomplex policies would hinder them and will finance from other school district jobs. Besides,it also had some problems about demographic diversity issues with populations of AfricanAmerican, Caucasian and Hispanic, etc as The Woodson foundation is mainly operated byCaucasian professionals while NCPIE was suitable served by the public schools.Norming stage:This third stage is the cohesion and cooperation for mutualdevelopment after agreement reached and agreed between the parties. In this case study, organizations unified their concerns is to meet the needs of students. The school systemwould be responsible for increasing student test scores. And the Woodson Foundation andNCPIE are united in their desire to see more parents engaged in the system. In my opinion, I suppose that this group is on the way of somehow between stormingand norming. Currently, the group was undergoing of resolving conflicts, which washappening and was forming a consensus and the basic principles and strategies forsustainable development in creating highly effective for high performance. Thus, for thatreason, I myself believe that this coalition was on the end of storming stage and on its way tothe third step of norming stage.
