Section Week 4 28/01/2008 19:05:00 Theories of Stability / Instability Polarity: Multi, Bi, Uni Stability occurs when there is a balance of power o Multi-polarity provides stability More states sharing power Collective security Alliances present o Multi-polarity also is responsible for some instability Draws more states into a small crisis Multitude of actors means multitude of concerns o Bipolarity is also stable Balance b/w only 2 main powers If 1 side gets stronger, then it is harder to regain balance of  power. Correction must be done internally, cannot count on  another state Arms races prevalent o Unipolar World occurs today: U.S.A. Hegemonic stability theory Maintain status quo
