American Graffiti 20/02/2008 14:43:00 George Lucas – 1973 classic youth-oriented film 24 hour period in the lives of an ensemble in a small town in summer some are going off to college nostalgic look at the 1960s Lucas was convinced that Hollywood was ignoring a huge part of its audience He was nostalgic for the upbeat values of old Hollywood Made a film about teenage rites of passage in a small town in the 1960s uses pop music as a major element establishes the period dense and complex soundtrack: layers sounds very evocatively sound plays key roles: radio DJ becomes a key character combination of diagetic and nondiagetic use of car radios off screen some significant  sound bridges DJ character provides continuity
