Identification of an Unknown Organic Compound Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to identify an unknown organic compound by determining certain physical properties of the substance. The physical properties that will be determined include boiling point, freezing point, density, color and solubility. Procedure/ Observations: First, the density of the unknown compound was determined. This was done by first taking the mass of an empty graduated cylinder. Then, 1 mL of the compound was added to the graduated cylinder and the mass was taken and recorded. This was repeated until the graduated cylinder had 3 mL of the compound. The freezing point was determined next. A small amount of the compound was placed in the test tube and the test tube was place in a mixture of ice and water. A calibrated temperature probe was placed in the compound as it was freezing. While freezing, the temperature of the compound dropped rapidly and leveled off at 0° C. The boiling point of the compound was taken next. A small amount of the compound was placed in a test
