Thurs, 9/4/14 FIVE FACES OF QING QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) Great leaders: o Narhaci: 1559-1626 formed 8 banners from Mongol tribes Color-coded tribes so that they can unite instead of fighting for separate causes – in return shared booty, rewards Created a writing system necessary for larger populations o Kangxi 1661-1722 established wealth and stability o Qianlong 1735-1795 Conquest of Xinjiang: 1758 Rejected Macartney Embassy 1793 China’s biggest/greatest dynasty but has humiliating moments o Militarily effective state o Very prosperous, even more so than Europe in the early era Manchus are a group of Jurchen people from NE China o Spoke own language unrelated to Chinese o Hunting and archery are important o Consolidated by Nurhaci into 8 Banner armies These banners become Qing’s hereditary military To be born male Manchu is to be born a soldier Held high offices Manchuria reminds a Manchu preserve off-limits to Han Population ratio to Han: 1/250 Mongols is a general ethnic term for several tribes and clans that share Mongol language/customs (sometimes allied) o Become members of the banner and were considered privileged in military, highly trusted o Relations with Qing court through patronage and marriage o Had great respect and connection with Tibetan Buddhism
