-1Michael Pham Mr. Ronnfeldt WRC 1013 September 28, 2007 Texas It all started in 1845, when Texas joined the United States as the 28 th state. From Austin to Zavalla, Texas is known for many unique things. The many things that only appeal to the Texas state such as being home to the great Alamo; also having a great array of professional sports teams, and Austin also being the live music capital of the world. On March 2, 1836 Texas declared an independent government against Mexico. The battle of the Alamo started with the Texans wanting and declaring independence from the motherland of the Mexican government. The Texans forces included both the Anglo-Saxons as well as many tejanos. The battle took place at the Alamo Mission in San Antonio. The immense Mexican army of 6,100 troops should have easily overcome the miniscule Texas army of 200 troops. The Texas army was undersized, but had much heart and motivation, they were fighting for a cause and that cause was independence. Lieutenant Colonel Travis wrote before the final attack of the Mexican army, “The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion otherwise the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken — I have answered their demand with a cannon shot, and our flag still waves proudly from the walls — I shall never surrender or retreat." But, the vicious battle lasted 13 days, from Tuesday, February 23 to Sunday, March 6. On March 3, 1836 the Mexican army took control of the Alamo but, with the 13 day battling it
