Exam 2 TermsTheodore Roosevelt:-Who did what:Roosevelt was an upperclassman from New York, wasPresident McKinley's vice president in 1902 and became the 26th president afterMcKinley was assassinated in 1901. Before he was president, Roosevelt had alot of political experience as Police Commissioner of New York 1(893), AssistantSecretary of the Navy (1897-1898), colonel of the Rough Riders (1898), andGovernor of New York (1898)-What:Roosevelt was one of the presidents during the Progressive Era andmade a tremendous impact on American History. Roosevelt worked forconservation of land, and successfully protected almost 230 million acres ofland.Roosevelt and Secretary of State John Hay wanted to build the Panama Canal;Secretary of State Hay negotiates a treaty with Colombia to give 6 mile strip ofland to build the Panama Canal, but the Panama Revolution began and the USdidn't get to negotiate the building of the Panama Canal until Panama Revolutionends and the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty is signed where the US recognizesPanama as independent, and pays Panama $10 million plus $250,000 a yearand grant US a 10 mile strip of land as if it were sovereign. With the Canal Zone,US has a "National Security Interest" in Panama, and it is best to keep everyoneelse out. However, the Europeans were deeply involved with Latin Americabecause they had lent money to Latin American nations. Roosevelt was worriedthat the Europeans were going to establish Spheres of Interest in Latin Americalike they had in China. Venezuela was in debt to Europe and in response Britain,France and Germany send their navies and bombarded cities and arbitrationfollows with all of the Venezuelan custom revenues to be used to pay off bondholders. In 1904, the Dominican Republic was $4 million in debt to Europe, butthis time Roosevelt says that the US will take over operation of customs serviceand pay off debts with or without US Marines and it was the DominicanRepublican's choice what they wanted to do.Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine- The US needed to protect PanamaCanal and the problems in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic worriedRoosevelt about the Europeans. Roosevelt said the the US would have to be thepoliceman of the Caribbean to keep Europe out and that it was the job of the USto help the rest of the world.Roosevelt also negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese War, established theDepartment of Commerce and Labor, preached a "Square Deal" for millions,which enabled all Americans to earn a living wage, built up a Navy as the "BIgStick" and established America as a major world power, reduced the Nationaldebt by over $90,000,000 and he secured the passage of Elkins Act and theHepburn Act for regulation of the railroads, The Meat Inspection Act and the PureFood and Drug Act for consumer protection and established the Food and DrugAdministration and the Federal Employers' Liability Act for Labor.
