Notes 8/23/07 The process: Understanding human beings and how we can understand human behavior Characteristics from syllabus Unpredictability = CHAOS. Dissonance is experienced through the lack of predictability. There is symmetry or there is asymmetry, balance and imbalance. We, as human beings are NOT comfortable with imbalance and asymmetry.  we create expectations – things WILL go the way we want them to.  Predisposition – everything is going to go the right way. We need to get used to expecting the unexpected. Example:  Politics – definition from the syllabus; resolving conflict; cultivating the  containment of a conflict we study politics not just to view the governmental systems but rather to view the  wrongs or actions inflicted towards other people.  As human beings, we live ONLY in the present, despite contemporary thoughts. Must use: Fantasy Imagination We can create and construct reality; that’s our job. Reality is  - SELF-action. Mind over matter. Importance of Interaction and Reaction Transactional  Person is the key variable – determines the behavior Not environment Not “the self”

Multiple aspects that apply to us By definition… this is CHAOS To deal with such thins, we IMPOSE order on such chaos We create a procedure that is as orderly as we can get it Politics is about containing cultivation and communication  (Definition in syllabus) Communication  - cultivating the sharing of meaning applied. Timothy McVeigh/Oklahoma City Bombing Journalist’s Son’s Logic Complexity/Interpretation of thinking HUMAN INTERPRETATION Human variable – explaining what’s going on Why do people behave the way they do? People assign meanings to things – UNLIKE any other animal Meaning represents a symbol With meanings come consequences  Symbol takes on a life of its own

Example: Sticking “the finger” at a police officer in Austin,  Texas can get you arrested. You are PROVOKING people to violence.  How’s this so? Because people overlook the sign and dwell on the  symbol. Clayton’s Pointer Finger
