Media convergence is when separate technologies come together to share tasks. Lule (2012) states, “media convergence, the process by which previously distinct technologies come to share tasks and resources” (pg. 42). An example of this would be using a smart phone to take pictures and video. This is an example of digital photography, video, and cellular technologies converging. Technological convergence makes multitasking much easier today. According to Lule (2012), “Convergence has also made multitasking much easier, as many devices allow users to surf the Internet, listen to music, watch videos, play games, and reply to e-mails on the same machine” (pg. 46). I believe the benefits of media convergence in regards to technology are clear. We can connect to basically any type of resource from anywhere we are, using a variety of different devices. This literally allows us to have information at our fingertips. However, I feel the high level of reliance on technologies affects the newer generations more than the older ones. Those individuals that grew up without cell phones and the internet are not as affected when these resources are temporarily unavailable; but the younger generation that has always had theseresources has a harder time dealing with the absence of these resources. Media convergence through technology has also changed the dynamics of our relationships. People use Facebook and add "friends" on there whom they’ve never even met. They use dating sites to find dates and potential spouses. We "Skype" or “Face time” people rather than talking face-to-face.
