Unformatted text preview: MIDTERM 2 KEY WORDS surfaces o everything you see is a surface o solve problems give more information than just an outline group elements into surfaces have feature level encoding: contours, regions, fragments, bits, pieces group related bits into surfaces combine surfaces into objects gestalt grouping laws (all) o reflect the probability that bits belong together in real scenes o proximity two nearby bits are statistically more likely part of the same object than are two distant bits o similarity higher similarity of material w/in an object than between a part of the object & its surround o closure objects are bound by volumes must have outer contours o good continuation objects are bounded by volumes must have enclosing contours on avg these are smooth o good form contour bits forming best shape group together best shapes are most familiar/regular/simplest ones o bad form certain cues indicate that two bits dont belong together (ex: t junctions) usually indicates occlusion of a surface opaque objects interrupt the contours of other objects in the background modal/amodal completion o amodal surfaces completing behind an occluding surface if arm is behind body, we still know the arm is there surface is not seen, but registered o modal surfaces completing in front of another even though the border isnt visible completed surface is seen (illusory) in real life, much less common than amodal only happens when two surfaces have same color & brightness no contour in the image only subjective contours (suggests an image is there by outlining in specific areas) physiology of subjective contours o show modal & amodal completion o show how much the visual system gambles in inventing surfaces bet is often wrong in sparse images, but seldom wrong in natural scenes w/ many cues to support the choice o V2 likes movement (whether its real or illusory) figure-ground o ambiguous border ownership = ambiguous figure/ground border ownership o borders between overlapping objects belong to only one of the objects o when regions meet, only one can own the border between them o owned by region perceived as being in front o if region doesnt own part of its border, it is unbounded can connect w/ other unbounded regions to form larger surfaces that complete behind...
