Biography of Allan Pinkerton 2Allan Pinkerton was bornin Glasgow Scotland in 1819 into a family of law enforcement officers. The son of a police sergeant, Allen developed a natural sense for adventure. He was an abolitionist involved in radical politics which got him into trouble. However, after an arrest warrant went out on him he was forced with his wife Joan to migrate to America in 1842. After settling in Chicago, Pinkerton began work as a barrel maker where his shop was also a station forslaves escaping to the north for freedom. Accidently, Pinkerton came across an event that would change his way of life. Allan came upon a group of counterfeiters and was instrumental in the arrest; this instigated Pinkerton’s position as deputy sheriff of Kane County. Pinkerton’s continued success in capturing criminals resulted in him being offered the position as an investigator with the police department of Chicago, which he accepted in 1846 (Columbia Encyclopedia, 2008). After awhile, Pinkerton went on to become the city’s first detective. After resigning from Chicago’s police department in 1850 Allan Pinkerton officially opened his first detective agency in the heart of Chicago called, “The Pinkerton National Detective Agency” (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2009).
